Moving Tips

Moving to a new home or new community can be rewarding yet difficult. If you are about to undertake such a venture, Moving Box Warehouse offers the following tips to help your experience go smoothly. For information about how to purchase moving boxes, newsprint packing paper, moving accessories, or complete moving kits to help with your move, you can visit our discount moving supplies page.

Moving Tip #1: Make a List
Before you start packing your possessions, make a simple inventory system. For every box you pack, place a number on the box and record the contents of that box on a Packing List. Keep your labels, marking pens, tape, and other moving boxes and supplies in a single place (we like to call it Packing Central). If you put your list down, make sure you only put it down in Packing Central so you don’t lose it. Make sure that you are specific when writing down the contents of your boxes.

Moving Tip #2: Have the Proper Moving Kit
Too often, movers underestimate the number of boxes required to move. Make sure you have enough boxes–if you purchase extra moving boxes, you can always return unused boxes for a refund within 10 days of delivery if you purchased them from Moving Box Warehouse. You can purchase complete moving kits that bundle together the number of boxes you would typically need with moving accessories like newsprint packing paper. Specialty kits from the Moving Box Warehouse contain boxes to handle special items. For example, kitchen moving kits contain dish boxes and dish cell kits for dish boxes.

Moving Tip #3: Use Wardrobe Boxes
Wardrobe boxes are useful for large lightweight items and clothing that cannot be folded. Measure your clothes in your closet rack and compare them to the dimensions of the wardrobe boxes to see how many you will need. Wardrobe boxes are also useful after the move as closet storage. Make sure you don’t overpack them though! Too much weight in wardrobe boxes will make them too heavy to lift.

Moving Tip #4: Color Labels
Mark each box with a specific color representing a room in your new house or apartment. For example, you can use orange for kitchen, yellow for the dining room, red for the living room etc. Apply the coloured stickers on the moving boxes next to your box number. You can put a sticker on the doors of your new home corresponding to the color on your moving boxes. This will make unpacking a lot easier. Through color coordination, you will be able to swiftly unload and unpack.

Moving Tip #5: Keep Things Together
Make sure to keep items and their accessories together when you are packing boxes. Keep light bulbs with lamps, hangers with clothes, etc. You can use tape or envelopes to keep small parts packed together with the item they belong to. By keeping things together, everything will be organized, and you won’t have to sort through tons of moving boxes to find what you are looking for.

Moving Tip #6: Keep Valuable Items Safe
Keep valuable items such as jewelry, silverware, or antiques with you during the move. If you run out of room, you can hide the items in a moving box titled “Misc. from kitchen pantry.” Ensure your homeowners insurance will cover you during the move. Also, find out what paperwork (receipts, appraisals, and photos) you might need to file a claim in case of loss. Important paperwork should also be kept in a specially marked moving box that you can easily identify.
